In the summer of 2010, Next, which at the time was the go-to weekly arts/pop culture/clubbing magazine for New York City’s LGBTQ+ community, did a whole feature article on a group of early- to mid-career artists whom the editors believed represented the “Next Generation” of creative leaders in the American theatre. People who are now very famous, such as future Macarthur “genius” Fellows Taylor Mac and Terell Avery McCrane, were included as part of the cohort. So was I. I feel like all these years later, I’m still trying to live up to this recognition and the distinguished company I was in.
