Fickle Mistress

In July 2012, Theatre Askew had the opportunity of presenting a workshop version of what would eventually be called Horseplay, or the Fickle Mistress: A Protean Picaresque as part of the Dixon Place HOT Festival, the longest-running celebration of queer performance anywhere. At the time the working title of Trav S.D’s play was The Fickle Mistress, an old soubriquet for fame. The play told the story of the fascinating saga of the mid-19th-century actress, equestrienne, poet, and model, Adah Isaacs Menken, who at the peak of her career was one of the most famous people on the planet. Now for all intents and purposes she’s completely forgotten. Originally from New Orleans and likely of mixed-race ancestry, Menken’s first stop on her road to cultural dominance was Cincinnati, Ohio, with her first husband, Alex Menken. In this scene the young newlyweds bicker over Adah’s growing stage career and Aex’s fondness for her liquor.

Molly Pope plays Adah Isaac Menken.
